Fairfax Pets On Wheels will follow the Fairfax County school system’s policy on event cancellations due to inclement weather. This FPOW policy would be for non-visiting events, such as new volunteer orientations, temperament tests, etc. The news of the school system’s cancellations is carried by radio and television stations, which are notified as soon as a decision is made.

    Dear Fellow Volunteers:

                It's time for the annual Shauna award nominations!  Please find below the information needed to recognize a wonderful FPOW pet volunteer.  Nominations will be reviewed by a committee, and the winners will receive a Certificate of Appreciation at the FPOW Annual Picnic in June.  Notice of the award winners will also be published in the following issue of the FPOW newsletter.

    Objective:  The Shauna Award is presented to recognize the pet and/or pets who have made the most significant impact on a resident(s) of a facility that FPOW visits.

    Period of Performance: April 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018

    Nominees:  Any FPOW pet volunteer with current health certification who actively visits an approved FPOW facility.

    Criteria for Nomination:  Based on first hand knowledge, briefly describe the contributions of the nominee and the nominee's impact on a resident(s) of the facility.  For example, describe a specific significant interaction(s) that you have observed.

    Impacts to be Considered:

      1)  Marked difference in improving resident's attitude;

      2)  Greater participation by facility personnel.

    Special Note Regarding Previous Winners:

    Pet volunteers who have already received the Shauna Award in previous years are not eligible for subsequent awards but may be nominated and recognized for honorable mention.

    Nominations:  Any FPOW volunteer, facility resident or staff member with personal knowledge of the pet's impact on a resident(s) may submit nominations.  The nomination should include the pet's name, breed, owner's name, facility visited, your name and phone number, and a description (100 words or less) of why you wish to recognize the pet with the Shauna Award.

    Nominations must be received by May 1, 2018

    The Shauna Award was established in 1993. The award is named for Shauna Marie Salisbury, beloved Irish Setter of Susie and Bob Duvall, who died on March 26, 1993. Shauna was an active participant in Northern Virginia Visiting Pets and later in the FPOW program from April 1987 until January 1993, well into her 14th year. Shauna epitomized the pet volunteer and was instrumental in getting residents of the facilities she visited to communicate with staff, family and volunteers. As the senior training dog of the Fairfax Nursing Center she trained many new four‑legged volunteers. Shauna always had a "smile" on her face and a "happy" wag of her tail.

    ●          Corporate:  Any business, organization, or other entity that has provided support and assistance to the program.

    CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION:  Based on first hand knowledge of nominee, briefly describe the contributions of the nominee and the nominee's impact on the program.  For example:

                Contributions to be considered: activities such as pet visitation with residents or any interactions that invite staff and resident participation, advocacy, committee participation, recruiting efforts, time and donations.

                Impacts to be considered: marked difference in resident's attitude; greater participation by facility personnel; support services to FPOW.

    AWARD:  A Certificate of Appreciation will be given to the recipient(s) at the Annual FPOW Picnic in May.  Notice of award winners will be published in Volunteer Vibes, the Agency's volunteer newsletter and in the following issue of the FPOW Newsletter.
